Help us identify the State mushroom for the State of Arizona!

The State of Arizona has identified a State bird (cactus wren), a State mammal (ringtail), State reptile (ridge-nosed rattlesnake), State tree (palo verde), and a State insect (two-tailed butterfly). But there has yet to be a state mushroom or fungi identified.

These state symbols have to be proposed as a bill to the state legislature, sponsored by one of the legislators (in senate or assembly), and then coached through the process by dedicated people who keep their eye on the ball. However, the first step is to vote and come to a determination of what species should be representative of the great State of Arizona!

We have identified four main candidates, although you are welcome to write-in your own as well.

Candidate 1: Calvatia booniana, Giant Western Puffball

Candidate 2: Amanita cochiseana (provisional name), Sun Caesar

Candidate 3: Boletus barrowsii, White King Bolete

Candidate 4: Podaxis inyoensis, Desert Shaggy Mane
