The 2021 summer monsoon season has gone beyond our meager hopes and we have received reports of vigorous fruiting in the White Mountains. To take advantage of such an amazing year so far, we are arranging for a "snap" foray to provide an opportunity for desert state fungi enthusiasts learn more about our local mushrooms!
We will be leading small foray groups on Saturday, July 24th at 9:00 a.m. in the White Mountains. You must register to attend. Registrants must be AMS members and can include one guest. This event includes hiking at high elevation, sometimes in areas with heavy downed logs and debris, which can be difficult for mushroom hunters of all ages.
There is no charge for this event.
Summer forays are a valuable opportunity to learn about our local mycoflora, and while edibles are likely to be found it is not the goal of the foray. If you are interested in learning about local mushrooms, and haven't had an opportunity to register for an AMS event this year, here is a chance for you.
Those registered will need to meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 24 east of Pinetop. Details on meet-up location will be sent to registered participants once you are registered.
Please only register if you are sure you can attend. There are limited spaces available for people to participate.
Please be sure to come to the event prepared for summer monsoon season in the high mountains. You will need hiking boots, sunscreen, food, water, rain gear, and basic first aid supplies. Please be sure to bring a trusty knife and netter or paper bags or baskets for collecting mushrooms.
The monsoon season has been especially active this year and it is possible the event is delayed or cancelled due to thunder storms.
