Our Foray Committee co-chair, Mike Dechter, has been out scouting around Flagstaff. While he still has not found any boletes, he reports that a number of edible species are fruiting. He's collected lobster mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, giant sawgills, velvet-foots, and the little-known but delicious Golden Robe (Floccularia straminea.) The first Sun Caesars (Amanita cochiseana) of the year were recently collected in Flagstaff also.
Mike has graciously volunteered to take out a group foray this coming Saturday. Up to 20 attendees can be accommodated.
If you didn't sign up for the memorial foray for Katey Johnson before it filled, or you couldn't make it all the way over to the White Mountains this weekend, here's an alternative for you. Sign up soon.
Please note, quantities of edible mushrooms may be limited on this foray, so the focus will be on familiarizing yourself with common mushrooms you may find, as well as tips and indicators to find even more desirable species when they fruit later.
